What should you see?
I’m going to visit a friend in Okinawa, and on the way I have a day long layover in Tokyo. I want to see stuff, but I also don’t want to get lost and die.
Suggestions?

Tough question... It is Sakura time right now, so I would recommend visiting the Imperial palace as it is pretty awesome during this season...
Other than that, just get lost in the city really... if it’s your first time in Tokyo, you’ll love it.

And what do you mean by “day long” layover? If you arrive at 9am in Narita and flys at 8pm to Okinawa, it’s actually a pretty tight schedule to do anything... If you spend the night, then you can really enjoy all this.

Mooneyes Tokyo. American and Japanese car cultures meet and blend at this place.

I’ll be there overnight. Booked a room at narita airport hotel. Didn’t want to get off the plane to Tokyo then get right on another for Okinawa.

What time is your flight to Okinawa? Booking a room at Narita is not the best idea actually... Tons of trains/buses go to Narita very early morning while a lot less got to Narita after 11pm...
By staying in Tokyo and not Narita, you’re allowing yourself to spend a lot more time in Tokyo during the evening

I don’t know how far it is to the city from the airport, but I would just go and look around. I doubt you can get really lost and die so long as you can afford a taxi back to the airport.

Should fly to Haneda. I fly ANA now and always go to Haneda so I save all that time getting to town.

That’s ok. I’m not planning on seeing the night life. Just wanted to go out and see some sites before getting rest and flying to Naha. My days are going to be packed in Okinawa.

Too late. I’m honestly not super-interested in Tokyo. I just wanted to see some stuff on my way to Naha.

I’ve been looking up museums and such, but I’m not into getting too far off the beaten path, I had a hard enough time in Germany where I could at least sort of read the street signs.

You DON’T want to take a Taxi for such a long distance really... It would cost you about 200/230$ to go from Tokyo to Narita by Taxi :)

Hmmm. My friend said to make sure I try soba in Tokyo because Okinawan soba is different. But I don’t know if I want to drink too.

Well there is a lot to see, depends on what you like, it has pretty much everything. Some of the train stations etc. can be pretty overwhelming but there are more translated signs now and some of the machines switch to English with a button on the screen, the ticket dudes in the office are very helpful, Japan is incredibly courteous and they will help if you need it. If you like history go walk around the park where the imperial palace is or the war memorial shrine has some aircraft and other stuff to see besides a traditional shrine, the Yasukuni Shrine, actually the shrine is not too far from the imperial palace area. I had a good day walking around all that last time I was there. My wife is Japanese and we were looking for some things we had never done when we had an extra day in Tokyo. Odaiba has the Toyota Megaweb showroom and car museum.

I kind of want to see the railway museum. Don’t know how hard it is to get to. I’m assuming though it must be near or at a major station. I’ll probably walk around the imperial palace. I like castles and such too.

Looks like it’s in Saitama, outside the city. It does appear to be on a Shinkansen line, so you could hop on and then go back. Looks like Tohoku Joetsu Shinkansen to the Tetsudo Hakubutsukan station. Google can help you now with trains. I didn’t have that when I moved there years ago! But from Narita it might be a bus and then something else. Looks like the museum is at the end of the station.

The railway museum is in Saitama. You have to go all the way to Omiya station on the orange line and walk from there to the museum...
Since you most likely won’t have an internet connection readily available to you, I would recommend you download and use this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/det…
Prepare the maps with important places in advance and go from there the app will locate you on the map and you will easily see your “important” points. (ie: Tokyo Station, Omiya Station, the Railway Museum, Narita Airport, your hotel...etc).
It helped me a lot way back...

Yeah, it’s too bad the Toyota Museum is not in Tokyo. I’ve always wanted to go to that one.

haha, I actually only have the Renault 8 and the SA22C now... And the R8 will most likely be on sale sometimes next week (will review it before it sales though, don’t worry haha). The Dino is almost gone and all the other ones are either being restored or sold already. That also mean that I will most likely go back to France fairly soon to get some more...

Well, we can go for a drive with one if you come here, but they are not mine anymore. I can still easily borrow one for a drive though. I never really liked Panhard haha

I remember your review. I love those cars. I’ve always regretted passing up a Dyna a few years back. Thanks for the invite. I’ll let you know when I finally make it across the Pacific.

I second the war museum! Going to a world War two museum in Austria was fun for me. I’ve been to war museums in the US and they have WAY more of the Allied side stuff. The one in Vienna had a ton more Nazi tanks and stuff. It was interesting to read it all from a different perspective. Maybe the Japanese museum could be similar.

The Narita Express runs from the airport to Shunjuku station and takes about 40 minutes. Once there you can connect to the rest of the city. I would recommend hitting the following:
Akihabara - Full on electrified, manga Tokyo. Try to go in the late afternoon or early evening to get the full effects of the lights.
Find a street market - There are several around town. Good cheap food, interesting people watching and a look at old Tokyo.
Megaweb - if you like cars go check out Toyota’s Megaweb and Heritage Museum. It is down by the water and easy to get to.
Sumo- if the sumo championships are going on get a ticket and go see that. Pretty cool.
Shunjuku - if you take the express in you can just stay around Shinjuku. There is a huge shopping area, lots of food and you can go to the top of the Tokyo Givernment building for free for a view of the city.

There is a Zero in the lobby and then there are a couple planes downstairs you aren’t supposed to take pictures of. Lot’s of things all over in there. It is controversial because they don’t mention any wrongdoing or war crimes. It is more of a shrine to the soldiers than a museum of historical accuracy but they do have information all around. It’s just some people don’t think they have enough info! Berang there is a train in there!

Well I imagine there aren’t too many planes left seeing as many of them were used as Kamikaze. Such an interesting and effective military tactic, until you run out of pilots of course..

Take the train in and out. Tokyo Express is fastest. I would suggest Shibuya and anywhere else you may want to see. You probably will just have enough time to walk around for a while.
